TiltWatch RFID – When to Use the RFID-Enabled Tilt Indicator
TiltWatch® RFID combines SpotSee's mechanical tilt-indicator technology with a passive RFID chip, so a shipment's orientation history can be read by an RFID reader rather than by eye. It suits warehouses and distribution centres that already scan incoming goods with UHF RFID and want to bring tilt monitoring into the same process.
SpotSee state that their indicators typically reduce damage from mishandling by 40 to 60%.
What is TiltWatch RFID?
A single-use, tamperproof tilt indicator fitted with a passive RFID chip. It monitors a single plane and activates when the package is tilted beyond its threshold, turning red. The chip's memory updates with it, so a standard UHF reader can tell whether the device has triggered without anyone inspecting it.
It is battery-free, so there is nothing to charge or replace, and it reads through any standard UHF reader already in place for inventory tracking.

How to read one
Configure the reader to read address 0x21 (word 33) in the standard EPC memory bank, Bank 1, reading a single word.
A returned value of 8104 means the indicator has triggered. A value of 8114 means it has not. Note that this is a value comparison, not the single-bit test used by ShockWatch RFID — the two products are read differently, so do not reuse one configuration for the other. Confirm the behaviour against your own reader setup before relying on it in a receiving process.
When to use TiltWatch RFID
- RFID-enabled warehouses and distribution centres — goods passing through an RFID gate are flagged automatically, with no line of sight needed
- Products that must stay upright — appliances, compressors, pumps, tall or top-heavy items, and anything containing liquids
- Operations needing to reduce receiving time — only flagged items need inspecting, so the rest move straight through
- Supply chains needing an electronic record — tilt events can be captured into a warehouse management or ERP system, showing where problems recur
TiltWatch RFID vs TiltWatch XTR
Both monitor a single plane and share the same housing size, but they are not the same device with a chip added.

The threshold difference matters. If your procedures are written around the XTR, check them before substituting one for the other.
Fitting best practice
- Mount on a rigid, non-flexing vertical surface
- Fix with the pressure-sensitive adhesive, or through the mounting holes using screws, nails or staples
- Keep the indicator window visible so it still works as a visual deterrent
- Use companion labels so handlers can see the shipment is monitored
