Temperature Sensitive Materials and Products
Colour Changing is a leading manufacturer, developer, and supplier of smart materials and technology, specialising in thermochromic materials, including liquid crystals. With over 30 years of experience, we offer expertise in materials science consultancy and R&D services.
What are Thermochromic Materials?
Thermochromic materials are fascinating substances that change colour in response to temperature fluctuations. This reversible colour change is triggered when the material reaches a specific activation temperature, altering its molecular structure and how it absorbs and reflects light. These materials are available in various forms, including inks, paints, pigments, dyes, powders, plastics, films, and fabrics, making them incredibly versatile for a wide range of applications.
How do they work?
Thermochromic materials come in different types, including leuco dyes, liquid crystals, and thermochromic pigments. Leuco dyes are microencapsulated dyes that change colour due to a chemical reaction triggered by temperature. Liquid crystals, as discussed earlier, alter their molecular structure, affecting light reflection. Thermochromic pigments, often based on metal oxides, undergo a reversible crystal structure change at specific temperatures, leading to a colour shift.
Applications and Industries
Thermochromic materials are used across diverse industries:
- Packaging and Labelling: Thermochromic inks are used to create temperature-sensitive labels for food packaging, pharmaceuticals, and other products, providing a visual indication of temperature changes that may affect quality or safety.
- Promotional Products: Novelty items like mugs, t-shirts, and stickers that change colour with heat are popular promotional giveaways.
- Safety and Security: Thermochromic paints can be used in safety signs and markings that become visible or change colour at specific temperatures, warning of potential hazards.
- Art and Design: Artists and designers utilise thermochromic materials to create interactive installations, colour-changing textiles, and dynamic artwork that responds to its environment.
- Medical Applications: Thermochromic materials are incorporated into medical devices and equipment for temperature monitoring and indication.
