This thermosmart® kit contains four aluminium discs each having a different durable finish: Matt black, mirror black, matt silver and mirror silver. Bonded to the reverse of each disc is a liquid crystal thermometer measuring 30ºC to 65ºC in 5ºC increments. The liquid crystal device on the disc is easy to read and shows how absorption of heat radiation depends on surface colour and texture. The discs have a warning sign in the middle which glows up if the temperature at which the discs could be damaged is reached. Thermocolour film is a fascinating material that changes colour depending on the temperature. This makes it an ideal resource for allowing pupils to explore qualitative ideas about hot and cold, temperature differences and energy flows. The SEP booklet Hot and Cold: Exploring Temperature Changes Using Thermocolour Film aims to provide suggestions for introducing thermocolour film into science lessons for 11 to 16 year olds. It allows a very wide range of phenomena to be explored much more readily than using a thermometer.
